The Chinese equivalent of the National Mall in Washington D.C., Tiananmen is the world's largest public square and has accommodated up to a million people at once on various occasions since it was built after the People's Republic was established in 1949. Today it is a mecca for both domestic and international tourists whom all seem obsessed with photographing one another with Tiananmen Gate and Chairman Mao's portrait behind them.
